Bill’s Newsletter Issue number TWO July 2009
Hello all again.
We have been
going through a very busy time for the club with us well into our summer season
,
our August golf week fast approaching.
County Competitions
Our superb run in the L.F. Wood came to an end at Boyce Hill after holding them at 2-3 in the morning greensomes we eventually went down 6-9 after the singles. The team captain John Oakley played a major part in our achieving a place in the last sixteen in this prestige’s Essex competition with his team selections, team talks and his encouragement to them during the various matches. It was pleasing to see support from members and friends at Boyce Hill.
Norman Plum came to an end this past weekend when the team were beaten by Abridge. This competition format is six pairs three at home and three away, better ball Stableford total points, our home pairings won by 9 points our away pairings lost by a greater margin. Abridge course was in a excellent condition having hosted the Open regional qualifying round on the previous Wednesday, it was also long and quite hilly and on a day of hot sun proved to be a difficult challenge. Team captain Steve Fender hosted at home whilst I was very pleased to support our lads at Abridge.
Jubilee Cup, our team is achieving really good results and at present having drawn one and won three in the league section of the cup looks forward to securing a place in the knock out stages. John Stace is team captain and again hearing his team talk and endless encouragement to the squad has helped lead to our best progression so far in this competition. Have now learnt that we have made the Quarter Final to be played at Woolston Manor by the 19th. July, I am looking forward to watching the match, come and have a day out and support our lads.

Friendly Match
At Felixstowe was well enjoyed by all participants and ended in an honourable draw. Team was led by our Vice President Ron Taylor. It was disappointing to find so few members entering into this the last inter club friendly and although we did manage sixteen names Felixstowe themselves could only match this number showing that perhaps we have the timings of this fixture wrong with so many other competitions taking place this early in the season and maybe we should review this next year.
Men’s Guest Day
Was held on Saturday June 20th. Numbers were disappointing with only 36 players which meant only 18 members invited a guest probably the lowest ever. Again I wonder on the timing of such a function early in the year or perhaps the days of such formality has passed, Breakfast, lunch and dinner with a 27 hole competition plus the fact that this is a self financing event to include food and prizes is proving to expensive in these difficult times. I have learnt that Frinton Golf Club cancelled their day through lack of support; also one guest informed me we are one of the few clubs who continued with this type of guest day.
However I can tell you that everybody attending seemed to enjoy the day.
Captains Day
After
considerable thought I have decided that my Captains Day will not follow the
format of 27 holes, but as with the successful drive in, will be eighteen holes
individual stableford. Catering being available from first tee offs and
throughout the day, there will be no evening meal arranged as at the drive in
because I believe it is too much of a rush for staff and diners, also it
seemed to push non diners from the club house. So I have asked Allison to open
the restaurant for the following Sunday Lunch which is very popular with
members and together I hope this will prove to be a good start to our August
golfing week, book your lunch early.
Presentation of my prizes will follow at the completion of play on Captains Day. Proceeds from the day will go into the Captains Fund which as I have already indicated will be shared between my stated charities and towards new furniture for club house.
Harwich and Dovercourt Open Pro/Am. A brand new competition open to all adults and eligible juniors will be held on the weekend of the OPEN. At the completion of the Friday Open round the names of the golfers making the cut will be placed into the draw for our own competition. Members entering the competition will draw a professional for their partner; the best combined score will produce our winner. Full details will be published soon; the proceeds from this will totally go to the Clubs Children’s Christmas Party.
Marcus Armstrong Memorial A truly enjoyable day as always organised in a professional way by Tony and family and whilst being wonderful fun day one’s memories of Marcus at this time are fondly recalled. I am certain all members and friends join me in saying thanks.
Local Rules. Currently a sub-committee is reviewing local rules with a view of removing the dropping zone at the Seventh green, and inclusion of following the E.G.U. guidelines allowing measuring devises. See notice boards prior to submitting recommendations to committee.
Handicaps Following a members request to review our handicapping procedures as he believes that we may not be following all the recommendations as per book, again we have a sub-committee reviewing the subject. We can assure members that whilst nothing is being wrongly done it may be that we can make changes to perhaps improve things. This review will take some time and any changes or additions recommended may not be implemented until next year.

Social Section
Friday Golfing evenings held usually every other week; these evenings are always arranged with the idea of giving an opportunity to mix up the contestants in a format of light competition with a small prize for doing well. All are welcome see notice boards for dates and times.
Events on Fridays such as Quizzes, darts, race nights etc. are kindly arranged and organised by Greg. Owing to his being injured at work the race night was postponed also with such wonderful weather we are enjoying, moving inside is not such an attraction at the moment.
A committee social evening on Wednesday discussed plans for the July dates and it was agreed to assist Greg in any way we can with his valuable contribution in organising the game type programmes. Sue and John will be aiming to organise the popular Play Your Cards Right.
Committee discussed the Clubs Golf Week in August looking at what seemed to go well in previous years and the organising of the period as a whole.
